Education for a Just Energy Transition

    • 5th December
    • 11:00 - 12:00
    • COP 28 Greening Education Hub

Education plays an important role in accelerating the transition to a sustainable energy future. Exposing young people to renewable energy related topics and careers early in their schooling will stimulate their interest in pursuing further education and training and eventually careers in the sector. It also helps to create a knowledgeable society with an understanding of the green economy and their role in achieving a transformation of our energy systems. Recognising this, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the UAE Ministry of Education, with the support of the Permanent Mission of the UAE to IRENA, embarked on an innovative collaboration to develop curriculum guidance and resources and share best practices. This session will showcase some of the outcomes of this collaboration which also feed into the broader activities of the Energy Transition Education Network, such as the Teaching for Net Zero Campaign, as well as the UNESCO-led Greening Education Partnership.

Agenda Setting on Education and Skills for the Energy Transition

    • 8th December
    • 10:00 am - 11:15 am
    • Global Renewables Hub (1st Floor Side Event Room)

Join IRENA and the Global Renewables Alliance for a roundtable discussion on how cooperative efforts, including through the Energy Transition Education Network (ETEN), can accelerate education and skills development for the energy transition. The energy transition will transform the economy, creating millions of new renewable energy and transition jobs, while also requiring the mainstreaming of green skills and competences in many existing occupations. There is growing concern that the acceleration of the transition will be impeded by skills shortages in many key areas. As such, urgent action is needed to scale up education and training efforts including the upskilling and reskilling of current workers as well as preparing the fast-growing youth demographic to join the workforce. The Energy Transition Education Network (ETEN) serves as a new cooperation platform to scale up education and skill building for a sustainable energy future. This session brings together ETEN members as well as other actors actively engaged in renewable energy education and training for an exchange of good practices as well as identification of areas of global collaboration to advance education for the transition.
